What is Cherry Eye?
Cherry Eye is a common condition inherited in certain breeds of dogs.
“Cherry eye” is a common term for prolapse of the third eyelid gland. This is when the gland starts to protrude from the corner of the eye. Cherry eye is an uncomfortable condition, and in some cases can lead to complications such as conjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers, which is why our experienced team of vets is on hand to treat your poorly pup.
There are a few methods for treating cherry eye:
- Medication, the vets may use a combination of anti-inflammatory drops and lubricants to encourage the gland return to its normal positioning.
- Surgical pocket technique, the vet would put the animal under general anaesthetic and stitch the gland back into its pocket. (This method is not suitable to young puppies as we do not recommend general anaesthetic unless necessary in very young or older dogs.)
