Elongated Soft palate
Having an elongated soft palate partially blocks the throat and can often cause breathing and feeding related issues.
Early detection and treatment of elongated soft palate is highly recommended. Many BOAS (Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome) related surgeries can be performed at the same time as spay or neuter procedures, thereby reducing the cost to pet owners and the number of visits to the vets.
Some of the dog Breeds prone to Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome include:
- Affenpinscher
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- American Bulldog
- Boston Terrier
- Boxer
- Bulldog
- Bullmastiff
- Rottweiler
- Pugs
This affects the opening of the nostrils, they may be narrow or completely closed. The soft palate may be too long and get pulled into the larynx when the dog breathes in.
Usually there are a combination of signs such as loud breathing/snoring, over excursion with exercise or heat , collapse, gagging, regurgitation and vomiting.
Typically the dog will recover quickly after surgery and will be discharged on the same day. We will prescribe pain medication, anti-biotics and anti-inflammatory. The dog should be rested for at least 7 days while the healing process takes place.
